About Bowen Therapy

What is fascia & how does it affect me?

  • Fascia is an incredible tissue......made up of collagen and elastin, it spreads uninterrupted like a web throughout your body. Holding us together, the fascia surrounds and connects the muscles, tendons, ligaments, bones and organs, all the way down to the cellular level. The fascia is also home to your vast lymph, blood and  nervous systems.

  • Under the stresses and strains of everyday life and especially when injury and disease occur, the fascia constricts, causing a tightening of the surrounding tissues. Due to this loss of pliability,  the fascia starts to suffer from dehydration, loosing its resilience and becoming dense and fibrous. These fascial restrictions can decrease the efficiency and mobility of your body.

  • Slowly, over time as your body starts to compensate by over using other muscles, tendons, blood vessels, organs etc, the normal functioning of your body becomes compromised, thus causing a knock on effect of tension and pain throughout the body,

When the client comes in with a particular issue, the pain from the original site of dis-comfort/trauma/disease may well be long gone and seem to have no apparent link with the presenting problem; this is why it is important as a Bowen Therapist to treat the whole human and not just a specific area/condition.

  • This Brilliant technique was pioneered by Thomas Ambrose Bowen, born in 1916 in Australia. It was brought over to the UK by Julian Baker in 1993.

  • The Bowen Technique is a fascial release therapy and is an extremely gentle and non invasive modality, there is no manipulation or adjustment of hard tissue.

  • The practitioner uses light rolling moves with their thumbs and fingers over precise points on the body to stimulate the underlying fascia and nerves in order to reboot the bodies natural repair system and relieve  tension and pain.

  • Bowen Therapy is unique in that a 2-4 minute break is put in between certain moves to allow time for the nervous system to respond.  Changes in tissue tension, mental state and energy activity are seen to occur during these hands off periods.

  • A typical session lasts 60 - 90 mins and includes a consultation, assessment and a Bowen treatment.

  • Bowen Therapy is safe to use on the tiniest of newborn babies, to pregnant women to the elderly.

  • For clients who have never received Bowen, three or four Bowen treatments 5-10 days apart are usually required to set a foundation for repair and help achieve finer results. This necessity can be compared to taking a course of medication, you wouldn't be expected to take one pill and get better, you would be advised to take the full course.

How does Bowen Therapy work?

  • First  thing's first, your body is equipped with an incredible nervous system known as the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS), it is divided into the Parasympathetic Nervous System (PNS) and the Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS).

  • The PNS is your rest and repair system, whereas the SNS is your fight or flight system.

  • For us with our busy and stressful lifestyles these systems can become out of balance, with the SNS (fight or flight) being over stimulated and the PNS (rest and repair) being under stimulated. This can lead to an increase in anxiety and stress levels which causes a detrimental affect on your bodies ability to run smoothly and repair itself, this inevitably leads to more health issues both mental and physical.

  • When the practitioner applies the Bowen moves, the aim is to disturb the fascia, causing the activation of the underlying nerve bundles which in turn send signals to the brain to engage the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS). This causes the SNS and PNS to come back into balance.

  • Due to the rebooting of the PNS (rest and repair) the brain can then send signals back to the restricted and stressed areas, stimulating and releasing the fascial tension, enabling blood to flow in and rehydrate the tissues.

  • This re balancing of the nervous system enables the rest of the bodily functions including the circulation, respiration, digestion, skeletal, muscle, endocrine, excretion, reproductive and immune system to start functioning with less restrictions and with more efficiency. This newly balanced and efficient working of the body can help to bring out the best in you.
