Why you feel exhausted all the time (and it's not just "being busy")

If you're a female business owner who's exhausted but can't quite explain why, this one's for you
You've had a full night's sleep. Your coffee is strong. Your to-do list is colour-coded (obviously 😉). And yet by 10am, you're already running on fumes, wondering how on earth you're going to make it through the day.
I know this feeling. Not because I've read about it, or because my clients tell me about it (though they do), but because I've lived it.
You're not lazy, dramatic, or in need of another early night. If you're a female entrepreneur asking, "Why am I always tired?" the answer is almost never as simple as "you're just busy."
Let's talk about what's really going on.

Why it happens
Here's what most women don't realise: exhaustion isn't just physical. In fact, for most busy women in business, the physical tiredness is almost the last thing to show up. It starts long before that.
I spent a long time not understanding why I felt so depleted, even when nothing obviously terrible was happening in my life. Looking back, I can see exactly what was going on, and I wish someone had explained it to me sooner.
Mental load overload. You're not just running a business; you're holding the entire thing in your head. The mental labour of entrepreneurship is relentless, and it rarely gets acknowledged as the energy drain it truly is.
Emotional labour. You show up for your clients, your team, your family, your friends. You hold space, solve problems, and keep everyone moving forward. But who's holding space for you? Emotional output without emotional replenishment is one of the fastest routes to burnout.
The pressure to perform. There's a particular kind of exhaustion that comes from never feeling like you can switch off. Doing nothing feels like failure. And so you keep going, running on adrenaline and dry shampoo.
I didn't have office hours for years. I'd answer emails at 10pm and feel guilty if I wasn't doing something productive. It took me a long time to understand that this wasn't dedication, it was depletion in disguise.
Chronic stress without recovery. Your body was designed to handle stress in short bursts, then rest and recover. But when stress becomes the default setting, your nervous system stays on high alert, permanently. That constant state of "on" is extraordinarily draining, even if nothing obviously dramatic is happening in your life.
The signs you're more than just "a bit tired"
You wake up exhausted, even after a full night's sleep
You rely on caffeine to function
Small tasks feel disproportionately hard
You're irritable, snappy, or emotionally flat , and not really sure why
You've lost enthusiasm for things in your business that used to light you up
You find it hard to focus or make decisions
Your body feels heavy, achy, or just... done
You keep telling yourself you'll rest soon
I nodded at every single one of these at my lowest point. If you're doing the same right now, this is your sign that something needs to change.

Some gentle ways to start turning this around
You don't need a complete life overhaul. You need small, meaningful shifts that actually work with your life, rather than adding more to it. These are things I've tried myself, and seen transform the lives of the women I work with.
Name it for what it is. Stop calling it "just tiredness" and start recognising it as your body and mind communicating something important. That shift in language alone changes how seriously you take it.
Audit your energy, not just your time. Not all tasks are created equal. Some fill you up; many drain you. Start noticing which activities leave you feeling depleted- certain meetings, certain clients, decision fatigue, social media- and look for ways to reduce or restructure them.
Build real recovery into your day. Not replying to emails with one eye on Netflix. Actual recovery: a walk outside, ten minutes of quiet, a proper lunch away from your desk. Your nervous system needs genuine downtime to reset.
Stop wearing busy as a badge. The hustle culture narrative is lying to you. Exhaustion is not evidence of commitment. Sustainability is the real flex.
Ask for support. This one's big, and often the hardest for women who are used to being the one everyone else leans on. Whether that's delegating in your business, leaning on the people in your personal life, or working with a coach to get to the root of what's keeping you stuck, asking for help is not a weakness. It's wisdom.
I know how hard that is to do. And I know how much changes when you finally do it.
What's possible when you ask for help
I've seen this shift happen so many times, and nothing illustrates it better than hearing it from someone who's been exactly where you are. Monika came to me at a point I recognise deeply: holding everything together on the outside, while quietly falling apart on the inside. Here's what she shared after six months of working together:
"I embarked on my journey to better health with Jess at a time when I felt like I was expending immense energy just to keep things together in my life. Mentally and physically exhausted, I found myself unhappy and resentful toward my family and friends...
Today, I feel uplifted in both spirit and soul, and lighter in both step and mind. The results of the program speak volumes; my Life Energy Factor has doubled in just six months! I highly recommend Jess if you are looking to improve your health and life energy; she will guide you through the programme with care and expertise."
Huge thank you to Monika for sharing so openly. If any of that resonated, you're in the right place.

More than just getting through the day
You built your business for freedom, for purpose, for a life that felt alive. Exhaustion doesn't have to be the price you pay for ambition.
I understand how you feel, because I've been there too. And I also know what's waiting on the other side when you finally stop pushing through and start getting the support you deserve.
If you're ready to stop running on empty and start building a life and business that energises rather than depletes you, I'd love to support you.Download my free guide so you can get back to feeling like the woman who started this whole thing in the first place.

Hi, I'm Jess. I'm a health and mindset coach and mentor, a big believer in calm success, and an unapologetic lover of donkeys (I could talk about them all day, just so you know what you're getting into). With over 12 years' experience as an integrative health practitioner and now a registered health coach, I've had the joy of helping hundreds of women find their way back to themselves.
I help busy, overwhelmed and anxious women restore their energy, find calm, and feel genuinely happy in their lives again.
I know this work because I've lived it. I used to push through, ignore my own needs, and wait for life to calm down… but it never did. That experience (along with a few others!) shapes how I help others now.
I'm the founder of Golden Bear Therapies, a former grower of micro salad for Michelin star restaurants turned equine and human Bowen therapist turned Health Coach and Mindset Mentor (yes, that really is all one person!), a passionate nature enthusiast, and very proud pet parent of 2 dogs, a horse, and a donkey.
I believe every woman deserves to feel genuinely at home in her own life, anxiety-free, calm, confident, and happy, and I'm on a mission to help as many of them as possible get there. More about me.
